You’re not going to get a lot of hard info about $.99 Dreams by visiting their myspace page, or their official site, for that matter. It’s pretty clear that they prefer it that way, as though all you need to know can be summed up by the crushing drums and menacing ambiance. I don’t think I would have discovered them myself had it not been for picking up an inauspiciously named 12″ at a fairly reliable record store and being immediately sent on a head trip with dubious intentions. Their music draws on the atmospherics and instrumentation of contemporary classical music, but the percussion is all hip-hop. This Thursday we’ll have a chance to delve a bit deeper as they come by Worldwide Smash for a guest mix of their own music, and a few choice selections from their peers and influences. Grab the track “brkj” for a taste of what’s in store.
